M10 · Problem 27 ★★ Check

CTT against STT, and the cost of exercise

(a) Using (10.28) and the rates of 10.14.1, compute the round-trip cost of ₹10,00,000 of notional bought and sold at the same price in an MCX futures contract, in rupees and basis points. Repeat for an NSE equity future (STT 0.05% on the sale, exchange charge 0.00183% each side, the same brokerage, SEBI fee, stamp duty and GST rules). (b) For the GOLD call of worked example 10.15.1 (premium ₹2,76,563 a lot), compute the CTT if the call is sold before expiry, the CTT if it is exercised (take the settlement price as ₹1,38,839 per 10 g, 100 units), and the CTT on selling the devolved future at the same price. (c) A trader who cannot hold a gold future into the tender period has an in-the-money call on the last day. Which path costs less, and what besides CTT decides it?
