Beginner Guitar Course

24 sessions. Your Saga SF-600C-BK. From zero to Grade 1.

You have just taken the most important step — you have decided to learn guitar. That takes courage, and everything from here is forward motion. This course will take you from your very first strum to performing complete songs and being ready for a Grade 1 guitar exam. No teacher required. Just you, your Saga SF-600C-BK, and a little daily practice.

  • Your guitar — the Saga SF-600C-BK Dreadnought Cutaway (or any steel-string acoustic)
  • A pick — a medium-thickness pick (0.71–0.88mm) is a good starting point
  • A tuner — a clip-on tuner or a free tuner app on your phone
  • A metronome — a free metronome app works perfectly (you will start using this from Session 3)

That is it. No amp, no cables, no special accessories. Just you and your guitar.

Steel strings press into soft fingertips — and yes, it hurts at first. This is completely normal. Your fingers will build calluses within two to three weeks of regular practice. During Phase 1, stop playing if your fingertips ache after 15 minutes. Come back tomorrow. Pushing through pain does not build calluses faster and can lead to bad habits. The course is designed with this in mind, so trust the process.

Follow this reading order:

  1. First — Read Guitar Guide. Get to know your guitar: its parts, how to hold it, how to tune it, how to hold a pick. Tune your guitar before you do anything else.
  2. Second — Read Course Overview. Understand the four phases, session format, and what you will be able to do by the end.
  3. Third — Start Session 01. Your first lesson. Follow sessions in order: session-01, then session-02, then session-03, and so on through session-24.

Between sessions, practise for 20 to 30 minutes daily. Consistency matters more than marathon sessions — fifteen focused minutes every day beats two hours on a weekend.

Handouts are referenced within sessions. When a session says “see” a particular handout, read it then. You can also browse them independently for deeper study. They cover music theory, technique, practice methods, and genre-specific material.

Print these and keep them next to your guitar. Use them for quick lookups during practice — chord shapes, scale patterns, TAB symbols, note names on the fretboard, and musical terms. You do not need to read them cover to cover; they are designed for glancing at mid-session.

After completing each phase (every 6 sessions), take the phase checkpoint. Be honest with yourself — these are not exams to pass or fail. They show you what you have mastered and what needs more practice. The final assessment at the end prepares you for the Grade 1 exam.
