Entry Check

  • Entry check — The eight tasks of Session 1, each with its own pass mark, that show whether you can already do what this course starts from. (Session 1)

This page holds the eight items of the entry check and your mark for each. Read this section before Session 1 begins: it is not part of the session’s 50 minutes. You take the entry check in Session 1, with this page open, and you take the items in their order. Print this page, or copy the item numbers and the lines to write on onto paper, so you can write your marks. After each item, tick Yes or Not yet on the two lines under it. Each of items 1 to 6 may be tried a second time straight away, and the second try counts. There is no third try. Item 7 is four presses at most, with no second try: a minute of barre presses holds four. Item 8 is taken once. Nothing on this page is taught. A “Not yet” is a result, not a fault.

Each item says how it is checked. The items use six kinds of check:

  • The tuner: pluck one open string and read the note the tuner shows.
  • The metronome: it clicks the beat while you play.
  • Counting aloud: count aloud while you play; the item says what you count.
  • Counting the strings that ring: pluck the strings of the chord one at a time and count the ones that ring.
  • A recording: record the item on your phone, then follow the recording on the page the item names.
  • The change test (Beginner Session 3): the beginner course’s rule for a chord change, printed under this list word for word.

Set the metronome to the tempo given; each click is one beat. Strum each chord once, with a downstroke, and let it ring. Play a new chord every 4 beats (on beat 1 of each measure) or every 2 beats (on beats 1 and 3), as the target says. Alternate the two chords until you have played 8 chords in a row: that is 7 changes. You pass when all 8 land on their click with every string that should sound ringing, twice on the same day.

In an assessment a change-test pair passes on one run of 8 chords in a row with no click missed. “Twice on the same day” is the pass mark of the weekly Self-Check Questions.

The phone test is in Segment 1 of Session 1. It asks two questions. Write yes or no after each.

  1. Can you hear both the strums and the clicks on a recording made with the metronome sounding? Yes or no: _____
  2. Can the phone record while it plays a backing? Yes or no: _____

If the phone cannot record while its own metronome sounds, a second device or a separate metronome gives the click, set down where the recording picks it up.

If the phone cannot record while it plays a backing, a second device plays the backing, and the two checks that are played over a backing say what to do with one device only.

If your phone cannot play the backing and record you at the same time, play with the backing sounding and judge it as you play; checking it on a recording then needs a second device.

The two answers are not items of the entry check and do not count in your result. The first is used in Session 1 itself: item 8, and every later check that is marked on a recording with the metronome sounding, needs the click on the recording. The second is first used in Session 4.

Items 1 to 7 are taken before the break of Session 1, and item 8 after it.

No notation is printed on this page. The strumming pattern of item 4 and the TAB of items 5 and 6 stand in Session 1, each under the heading that its item’s “If not” part names. For items 5 and 6 you follow your recording on the TAB there.

Under each of items 1 to 7 is a line to write on. For an item you marked Not yet, Session 1 has you copy two things onto it: the item’s drill, which is in its “If not” part, and its entry tempo, which is the tempo in the item’s first part (items 3 to 6 have one). The other lines, under items 2, 3 and 8, say what is written on them.

Item 7 is barre work: the simplified F counts.

Barre work: no more than 5 minutes a day in total. Pain rule: tender fingertips are normal. Pain in the wrist, forearm, thumb joint or knuckles, numbness or tingling, any sharp pain, or pain that lasts into the next day means stop. The full rule is in START HERE.

1. (0.5 minutes) Tune all six strings with the tuner, then pluck each open string once more, from string 6 to string 1. Check: read the tuner for each string. Pass: all 6 strings read their note: E, A, D, G, B, E. If not: tune each string from below, as the beginner course taught, at the start of every practice day, under “Item 1: Tuning” in Session 1; take this item again on the last practice day of the week.

2. (3.5 minutes) Play each open chord from memory, Em, Am, E, D, A, G, C and Dm: place it and pluck one at a time the strings that should sound. Check: count the strings that ring in each chord. Pass: every string that should sound rings, for all 8 chords. If not: in the Entry items row, for each chord that failed: look it up in Chord Chart, then place, strum, lift, place, 8 placings a day, with the two fixes for a string that does not ring, under “Item 2: Eight Open Chords” in Session 1; take this item again on the last practice day of the week.

3. (3 minutes) The change test for Em and Am, for G and D, and for C and G: a new chord every 2 beats at 70 BPM. Check: the metronome clicks the beat: one strum on each chord, counted aloud. Pass: 8 chords in a row with no click missed, for each of the 3 pairs. If not: in the Entry items row, take the pair that failed at 60 BPM and climb back 5 BPM at a time, under “Item 3: The Change Test” in Session 1; take this item again on the last practice day of the week.

4. (1.5 minutes) Play D D U U D U on one chord of your choice at 75 BPM. Check: the metronome clicks the beat; count the measures aloud. Pass: 8 measures without stopping. If not: in the Entry items row, go back to 65 BPM and climb 5 BPM at a time, each step after three runs in a row with no stop, under “Item 4: D D U U D U” in Session 1; take this item again on the last practice day of the week.

If Not yet, the drill and the entry tempo: ______________________________

5. (4 minutes) Play the C major scale from memory, one octave, up and down, in eighth notes, two notes per click, at 60 BPM. Check: record it and follow the recording on the scale’s TAB in Session 1. Pass: 3 times in a row with no wrong note. If not: in the Entry items row, play it from its TAB in quarter notes at 60 BPM, one note per click, then again in eighth notes, under “Item 5: C Major Scale” in Session 1; take this item again on the last practice day of the week.

6. (4.5 minutes) Play the A minor pentatonic in open position from memory, up and down without a stop at the top, in eighth notes, two notes per click, at 60 BPM. Check: record it and follow the recording on the two TAB blocks in Session 1. Pass: 2 times in a row with no wrong note. If not: in the Entry items row, play it from its TAB in quarter notes at 60 BPM, one note per click, then again in eighth notes, under “Item 6: A Minor Pentatonic, Open Position” in Session 1; take this item again on the last practice day of the week.

7. (1 minute) The simplified F: press, pluck strings 4, 3, 2 and 1 one at a time, release; four presses at most. Check: count the strings that ring in each press. Pass: all 4 strings ring, in 3 presses in a row. If not: use the minute of presses in the Warm-Up row and no more: move the finger closer to the fret wire and roll it slightly onto its edge, under “Item 7: Simplified F” in Session 1; take this item again on the last practice day of the week.

If Not yet, the drill and the entry tempo: ______________________________

8. (8 minutes) Play one study of your choice from the beginner course, from your own count-in to its ending, with the metronome clicking throughout, and record it. Check: listen to the recording once with the beginner page open and make a mark at every stop. Pass: 0 stops, and the last note lands with the click. If not: in the Entry items row, lower the metronome by 5 BPM, play the four measures round each stop three times, then play the study once through, under “Item 8: Your Study” in Session 1; take this item again on the last practice day of the week.

With all eight Yes, nothing more on this page is for you. With one to three Not yet, read the next paragraph only. With more than three Not yet, read from “More than three Not yet” to the end.

One to three Not yet. The Entry items row of Week 1 holds each item you marked Not yet, with its own drill from the beginner course at its entry tempo. Take the item again on the last practice day of the week. For an item that is still Not yet then, the “Any no” line of Session 1 holds first: repeat Week 1’s plan for up to one more week, with the item still in its Entry items row, and take the item again. If it is still Not yet after that, go on to Session 2 with the item in your Warm-Up until it passes. The Entry items row is in the plan of Week 1 only. Items 1 and 7 are not copied into the row: their “If not” parts say where they are done. With more than one item in the row, its 10 minutes are shared equally among them. Item 8 is practised in this row, the measures round each stop, and is taken again in the row “Your study”, on the last practice day of the week.

More than three Not yet. The beginner course is the guitar course that this one follows, on the same site, and its sessions are named here as “Beginner Session N”.

Beginner Sessions 1 to 6 are Phase 1, 7 to 12 Phase 2, 13 to 18 Phase 3 and 19 to 24 Phase 4, so the study you chose has the phase of its session.

Find the phase of each of your Not yet items in the table. Where a row names more than one phase, take the phase of the part that did not pass: for item 2, the phase of each chord you wrote down; for item 3, Phase 4 if you know the rule and missed a click, and Phase 1 if the rule itself was not clear to you; for item 4, Phase 2 if you can play the pattern and could not keep it going at 75 BPM, and Phase 1 if you cannot play it; for item 8, the phase of your study’s session. Go back to the earliest of those phases, work forward from there, and take this entry check again when the beginner course’s own end-of-course assessment is passed.
