Reading Staff Notation, Part 2
When to read this: after Session 22, “How to Read a Day’s Line” (5 minutes); after Session 28, “Stage 4: String 6, Rests and Ties” (5 minutes). None of this reading is part of a session’s 50 minutes.
What You’ll Learn
Section titled “What You’ll Learn”This handout teaches you to play from the staff in three more stages. Stage 3 is the notes of strings 4 and 5, and the key signature of G. Stage 4 is string 6, rests and ties. Stage 5 is the unseen routine. Then it gives you one line for each practice day of the weeks of Sessions 22 to 33 and 35, and five unseen melodies for the week of Session 34.
Every staff here is printed without TAB: the TAB of each is its answer, under “Answers”.
How to Read a Day’s Line
Section titled “How to Read a Day’s Line”Most weeks have a “Staff reading” row of 3 minutes. In it you read the day’s line in five steps:
- Say the letter name of every note aloud from the staff, without playing.
- Count the line aloud and clap where a note begins.
- Play it slowly to your own spoken count.
- Turn to the line’s TAB under “Answers” and compare.
- Play it twice more from the staff.
Read one line a day and do not look ahead: a line you have seen is no longer a first reading.
Do not look at a line’s TAB before you have played the line.
In a week you repeat, read the same five lines again, one a day, by the same routine. They are no longer first readings, and that is expected: do not read the next week’s lines early.
Picking: The pick follows the count: down on the numbers, up on the &s.
In the weeks of Sessions 22 to 29 the last two playings, in step 5, are with the metronome at 50 BPM, one click to a beat. In the weeks of Sessions 30 to 33 they are at 50 BPM, and at 55 BPM from the day after three metronome playings in a row, counted across days, had no stop and no wrong note. In the weeks of Sessions 34 and 35 each line is read once, by the unseen routine of Stage 5, with the metronome at 55 BPM, and at 60 BPM by the same rule.
You play the line three times: once in step 3 and twice in step 5. The last of the three is the day’s check. Check: straight after it, look at the line’s TAB under “Answers” again and count the notes you played differently. Pass: no stop and at most 1 wrong note. If not: play the line once more from the staff, slowly, to your own spoken count; the next day’s line is read the next day, as usual.

A ledger line is a short line that carries the staff on downward: the beginner course’s staff handout named it.
The key signature of G
- Key signature — The sharps or flats at the beginning of a piece that tell you which key the music is in. Each one holds for every note of that letter, and a major key shares its key signature with its relative minor: G major and E minor both have one sharp, F sharp. (Session 7)

The sharp at the start of each line stands on the top line, F, and holds for every F of the line, high or low: no sign is printed beside the note.

Rests

Rest — A silence that lasts a set number of beats, or a set part of a beat. In this course you stop the strings for a rest, and its count is written in square brackets, as in [2]. (Session 3)

Whole rest, half rest, quarter rest, eighth rest — A rest as long as the note it is named after: in 4/4 and 3/4, a half rest is two beats, a quarter rest one beat and an eighth rest half a beat. A whole rest is four beats in 4/4, and it also fills one silent measure of any time signature. (Session 3)

A count in square brackets, such as [4], is a rest: stop the strings on that count and keep counting. The silence lasts through every count in square brackets after it.
In a picked line a rest is made with the same rest stop: lay the edge of your picking-hand palm across the strings you have played.
Ties
- Tie — A curved line on the staff that joins two notes of the same pitch. Play the first and let it ring for the length of both. (Session 28)

A note that lasts three beats is written here as a half note tied to a quarter note, as in the example.
Sharp and natural signs
- Accidental — A note that is not in the key signature, and the sign in front of it on the staff: a sharp, a flat, or a natural sign, which cancels a sharp or flat. The sign holds for that line or space until the end of its measure. (Session 28)

Stage 5: The Unseen Routine
Section titled “Stage 5: The Unseen Routine”- Unseen — Written music you have not seen before a test: an unseen TAB passage, an unseen chart or unseen staff measures. You study it for 30 seconds and then play it; another name for this is sight-reading. (Session 6)
The unseen staff routine: (1) Set the metronome to 60 BPM. (2) Study the passage for 30 seconds without playing: its first note and its last, its lowest note and its highest, and any eighth notes. (3) Start the recording. (4) Count one measure aloud. (5) Play the passage once, to the end, without stopping. (6) Check the recording against the passage’s TAB under “Answers” and count the wrong notes.
In the 30 seconds, look at the key signature first: if there is one sharp, it is F sharp, and every F in the passage, high or low, is played as F sharp.
The figure to set in step (1) is the one the week’s row gives: it starts at 55 BPM and climbs to the 60 BPM of the line.
The pass mark is no stop and at most 1 wrong note.
If a note or a chord goes wrong, keep the count and play the next one in time: never go back.
Each melody is read once as an unseen: after it has been checked it is a line like any other, and you may play it again.
Unseen Melodies for Week 34

They are in the form of the unseen melodies of the end-of-course assessment: four measures, in first position, in C major or G major, in half, quarter and eighth notes, with no rest, no tie and no accidental.
