Phase 5 Checkpoint: Six-Eight, a Song of Your Own and the First Full Barre
How to Use This Checkpoint
Section titled “How to Use This Checkpoint”When it is taken: after the last practice day of Week 30 and before Session 31, in two sittings: on one day with at least an hour between them, or on two days. These days are added to the week: the rest day stays a rest day, and Session 31 waits until the checkpoint is done. No sitting is taken on a practice day.
Sitting 2 comes at least one day after the two ear recordings of Session 30.
Neither sitting is taken on Week 30’s last practice day: it holds the week’s one take.
Sitting 1 takes 28.5 minutes, 28.5 of them playing.
Item 8’s marking of its take, about 5.5 minutes, counts as playing.
Sitting 2 takes 24.5 minutes, 0 of them playing: cards, listening and marking.
No sitting holds more than 30 minutes of playing or 50 in all.
The checks: the tuner (item 1), the click, a count said aloud, a recording followed on the page, a theory card’s back, and the recorded card test (Session 2) for items 11 and 12. An item is passed at its pass mark, and not before.
You need the guitar, a pick, the tuner, a metronome that goes down to 30 BPM (a phone app does), a phone that records, your theory cards of Phases 1 to 5, your song map with its chart and its recording, the two ear recordings with their key piles, and the pages of “Greensleeves” (Session 28) and of your second piece.
Pain rule: tender fingertips are normal. Pain in the wrist, forearm, thumb joint or knuckles, numbness or tingling, any sharp pain, or pain that lasts into the next day means stop. The full rule is in START HERE.
The day’s limits hold here too: item 1 is full barre work and barre work, and item 3 is three-string power-chord work.
Items 2, 3 and 4 may be tried twice on the same day; the second try counts, and there is no third. Item 3’s second try stays inside the day’s 5 minutes of three-string power-chord work. If anything aches, stop playing for today.
Every other item is taken once in a sitting: item 1 is the day’s full barre work; 5, 6 and 7 need an unseen passage; 8 is one take a day; 9 is one draw of ten cards; 10 is two listens; 11 and 12 are answered from a recording.
A second try counts in the sitting’s 30 minutes of playing; when they are used up, the rest waits for another day.
On the last two practice days before Sitting 1, end the Warm-Up row with eight measures of D D U U D U on known chords, at 90 BPM, then 95 BPM.
Begin each sitting with the movements under “Hand Warm-Up” in Segment 1 of any session, and tune: neither is counted in the minutes.
Print this page, or copy the item numbers and the lines to write on onto paper, so you can write your marks.
Skills Checklist
Section titled “Skills Checklist”The pain rule comes before every item: an item that hurts is stopped and counted as not yet passed, and nothing more is played that day.
Read each sitting’s items through before you begin it: an item’s minutes are for doing it, not for reading it.
No item asks for a tempo above the figure its ladder has reached by the end of Week 30’s practice.
Sitting 1
Section titled “Sitting 1”No chord diagram, no pattern block and no block of a piece is printed in this sitting. Play each from memory or from its own pages: A (full barre) (Session 28), D D U U D U (Beginner Session 5), the first line of the Push Study (Session 29), the 6/8 pattern (Session 26), and the two pieces of your programme, “Greensleeves” (Session 28) and your second piece (its session is in the table under “The Phase 5 Programme” in Session 30).
Full barre work: no more than 2 minutes a day in the week of Session 28 and 3 minutes a day from Session 29, at fret 5 only. It counts inside the 5 minutes of barre work.
Barre work: no more than 5 minutes a day in total. Pain rule: tender fingertips are normal. Pain in the wrist, forearm, thumb joint or knuckles, numbness or tingling, any sharp pain, or pain that lasts into the next day means stop. The full rule is in START HERE.
1. (2 minutes) Press A (full barre) at fret 5: press, pluck the six strings one at a time, release, and shake out the hand, three times. Check: pluck the strings one at a time and count the strings that ring; the tuner shows A, E, A, C#, E, A. Pass: at least 5 of the 6 strings ring, 3 times in a row. The item never has to pass, as the line under it says. If not: find the string in the table and move the finger it names; do not press harder; keep the “Full barre” row as the practice plan has it, under “If a string is dead or buzzing” in Session 28; take this item again at the end-of-course assessment: this item is reported and holds nobody back.

The full barre never has to pass: the pain rule comes first.
2*. (1.5 minutes) Keep D D U U D U going for eight measures on a chord cycle of your choice, then play one more downstroke on the next beat 1, and record it, at 95 BPM. Check: the metronome clicks the beat; count the measures aloud on the recording. Pass: 8 measures with no stop, and after them 1 more downstroke lands on the next click. If not: go back to 90 BPM for two days and take the step again after three clean runs in a row, under “D D U U D U at 95” in Session 30; take this item again after the one more week that “Overall Phase Assessment” gives.
- Yes

Three-string power-chord work: no more than 5 minutes a day in total.
Fast strumming: if your strumming hand or forearm aches, that is tension. Stop playing for today, and next time loosen your grip on the pick.
Pain rule: tender fingertips are normal. Pain in the wrist, forearm, thumb joint or knuckles, numbness or tingling, any sharp pain, or pain that lasts into the next day means stop. The full rule is in START HERE.
3. (3 minutes) Play the pushed pattern through the first four measures of the Push Study, one chord to a measure, after one counted measure; then play one more downstroke on the next beat 1, and record it, at 45 BPM. Check: the metronome clicks the beat; listen to the recording and count 1 e & a aloud with it. Pass: 4 measures with no stop, the 1 downstroke after them lands on the next click, and 0 of the 16 muted strums has a note in it. It is reported as a start on Grade 3 skills and does not have to pass. If not: go back to the pattern on a muted F5 at 40 BPM, inside the day’s 5 minutes of three-string power-chord work, under “The Pattern on F5, and the Study’s First Line” in Session 29; take this item again at the end-of-course assessment: this item is reported and holds nobody back.

4. (3 minutes) Strum the 6/8 pattern on Em for eight measures, and record it, at 30 BPM, two clicks to the measure. Check: a recording: count 1 2 3 4 5 6 aloud with it and listen for the two loudest strums of each measure. Pass: you never stop, and counts 1 and 4 are the loudest strums in all 8 measures. If not: go back for one day to the metronome at 90 BPM, clicking eighth notes, saying ONE and FOUR aloud, then change the click again, under “6/8 with Two Clicks to the Measure” in Session 29; take this item again at the end-of-course assessment: this item is reported and holds nobody back.

5. (2.5 minutes) Play the four-measure TAB passage printed with this item, which you have not seen, in quarter and eighth notes, with a longer note where a phrase ends, at frets 0 to 3, after 30 seconds of study, and record it, at 60 BPM. Check: a recording, followed on the page afterwards. Pass: no stop and at most 1 wrong note. If not: in the 30 seconds say the string and the fret of every note aloud in order, under “Unseen TAB” in Session 30; take this item again after the one more week that “Overall Phase Assessment” gives, and only if none of items 5, 6 and 7 passed, on passage D under “Passages for a Second Try” and not on this passage again.

The unseen TAB routine: (1) Set the metronome to 60 BPM. (2) Study the passage for 30 seconds without playing: the strings it uses, its lowest and highest fret, any eighth notes, and the count of its last note. (3) Start the recording. (4) Count one measure aloud. (5) Play the passage once, to the end, without stopping. (6) Follow the recording on the TAB and count the wrong notes.

6. (2.5 minutes) Strum the four-measure chord chart printed with this item, which you have not seen, after 30 seconds of study (in the box with two chords the second chord comes on beat 3), one strum on each chord, and record it, at 70 BPM. Check: a recording, followed on the chart afterwards. Pass: no stop, and every chord falls in its measure, in all 4 measures. If not: say the chord names of a chart from an earlier session aloud and place each change once without strumming, under “Unseen Chart” in Session 30; take this item again after the one more week that “Overall Phase Assessment” gives, and only if none of items 5, 6 and 7 passed, on chart D under “Passages for a Second Try” and not on this chart again.

The unseen chart routine: (1) Set the metronome to 70 BPM. (2) Study the chart for 30 seconds without playing: its Key and Time line, each chord, any measure that holds two chords, and any repeat signs or endings. (3) Start the recording. (4) Count one measure aloud. (5) Strum the chart once, to the end, without stopping, one strum on each chord. (6) Follow the recording on the chart and count the chords that do not fall in their measure.

7. (3 minutes) Play the four measures of staff notation printed with this item, which you have not seen, in first position, in C major or G major, in half, quarter and eighth notes, after 30 seconds of study, and record it, at 55 BPM. Check: a recording, checked against the passage’s TAB in the “Answers” section of this page. Pass: no stop and at most 1 wrong note. If not: read each day’s line of the staff handout by its routine, saying the letter names aloud before you play, under “Unseen Staff Measures” in Session 30; take this item again after the one more week that “Overall Phase Assessment” gives, and only if none of items 5, 6 and 7 passed, on staff measures D under “Passages for a Second Try” and not on these measures again.

The unseen staff routine: (1) Set the metronome to 55 BPM. (2) Study the passage for 30 seconds without playing: its first note and its last, its lowest note and its highest, and any eighth notes. (3) Start the recording. (4) Count one measure aloud. (5) Play the passage once, to the end, without stopping. (6) Check the recording against the passage’s TAB under “Answers” and count the wrong notes.
In the 30 seconds, look at the key signature first: if there is one sharp, it is F sharp, and every F in the passage, high or low, is played as F sharp.
Every staff here is printed without TAB: the TAB of each is its answer, under “Answers”.
The block below is closed. Open it at step (2) of the routine, when the 30 seconds begin, and not before.
The passage of item 7
Slur work: no more than 5 minutes a day in total.
Item 8 is played from the pages of its two pieces: “Greensleeves” in Session 28, and your second piece in its own session. The performance tempo of “Greensleeves” is the metronome at 40 BPM, two clicks to the measure (three counts per click), as its Tempo line in Session 30 says; your second piece’s is in the table under “The Phase 5 Programme” in Session 30.
No metronome sounds while a piece of a programme is played. Before each piece, with the recording running, set the metronome to that piece’s performance tempo, listen to eight clicks and stop it, then count one measure aloud and begin.
A piece that begins with pick-up notes is counted in as its page prints it: the tune’s own counted measure is the count-in.
A stop is a break in the count inside a piece: going back, beginning a measure again, or waiting a whole measure or longer before coming in. Keeping the count and coming in on the next beat 1 is not a stop: its notes are counted as missed.
A take with a stop has not passed and ends at the stop. One take a day: the next is made on a later day and begins with the first piece.
In a strummed piece, and in the strummed verse of a tune, one wrong or missed note is one measure in which the chord is wrong, late or not played.
The page of the piece you play from memory stays out of sight until you mark the take: closed on a screen, or a printed page laid face down.
8*. (11 minutes) Perform a programme of two complete pieces, one after the other, each played alone from your own count-in to its written ending, recorded in one take, one of the two from memory: “Greensleeves”, and the complete piece from Phases 2 to 4 that you rehearsed in the week of Session 30; by the rule of a take printed with this item. Check: the recording, followed on the page of each piece: each piece played alone, as its page writes it, with no backing sounding. Make a stroke for every wrong or missed note; a strummed piece, and the strummed verse of “Greensleeves”, are counted as the rule of a take printed with this item says. Pass: no stop; each of the 2 pieces reaches its written ending; at most 3 wrong or missed notes in either piece. If not: work on the sections where the strokes are, four measures at a time with the metronome, in the “Programme” row, then make one new take, on a later day, from the first piece, under “Marking Your Take” in Session 30; take this item again after the one more week that “Overall Phase Assessment” gives.

Of items 5, 6 and 7 one must pass.
Sitting 2
Section titled “Sitting 2”9. (2.5 minutes) Shuffle your theory cards of Phases 1 to 5, keep the pile question side up, draw ten, and answer each aloud. Check: turn each card over. Pass: 8 of 10. If not: read the back of each card you missed aloud and find its statement in its theory handout, under “Theory Cards” in Session 30; take this item again at the end-of-course assessment, with ten cards drawn again: this item is reported and holds nobody back.

Item 10 is done away from the guitar: the two listens are counting, not playing.
10. (10 minutes) Take the song map of one song from a published chart you own: tuning, key, capo, the sections in order and the measures in each. Tap eight clicks of the chart’s tempo with the recording; then listen through twice, counting the measures of each section. Two listens of a song of four minutes take about 10 minutes, and a longer song takes longer: this is listening and counting, not playing. Check: your two sets of counts against the map. Pass: the counts are the same on both of the 2 listens and add up to your map. If not: count the section that differed a third time and keep the number that comes twice, or map another song by rule 4 of Learning A Song, under “Before the First Practice Day” in Session 27; take this item again at the end-of-course assessment: this item is reported and holds nobody back.

The recorded card test
You need a phone that records sound, some slips of paper, a pen and a sheet of paper for your answers. A test that needs the metronome says so.
- Make the pile of slips the test describes. If you made it for an earlier recording, use it again. After you have marked a recording, put all its slips back into one pile.
- Shuffle the pile face down. Start recording. For each item, turn over as many slips as the test says and lay them in a row from left to right: say the item’s number aloud (“one”, “two”, …), play the item, and put its slips face down on a new pile, one at a time from left to right. Keep the pile in order.
- Stop recording. Put the slips you did not turn over to one side: they are not part of the key. Put the new pile away without looking through it. The new pile is your answer key.
- Wait until the day you take this assessment, at least one day later, so that you no longer remember the order.
- Play the recording once through. Write your answer for each number. Stop the recording after an item if you need time to answer, but do not play any item again.
- When every answer is written, turn the key pile over, so that the first slip you played is on top. Deal the slips out in order, as many to an item as the test says, and mark your answers.
If someone else can play the items for you where you cannot see their hands, that works equally well: skip steps 2 to 4.
Before the first item, record five seconds: say “test” and make the sound of the test once, a strum, a note or four claps, with the metronome sounding if the test uses it. Then listen. If you cannot hear your voice, the sound and the click, move the phone and record the five seconds again.
The number you say aloud is the item’s place in the recording (“one” for the first item), never anything written on a slip.
If you play or clap an item wrongly while you record, say “again” and do the item again. On marking day, answer from what comes after the last “again”.
If you cannot make out an item on the recording, cross out its number: it counts as wrong. If two or more numbers are crossed out, do not mark the recording: make a new one the same day and mark it on your next practice day. If that day is the last practice day of the week, mark it on the first practice day of the next week and answer the self-check question then. The new recording and its marking are not part of the practice minutes. You do not repeat the week for it.
At a checkpoint, mark the new recording on the day after you make it, and mark its item then: the result waits for it.
Write the result as a count, such as “7 of 10”, with the test’s number and the date, at the foot of your answer sheet, and keep the sheet: a self-check question or a checkpoint item will ask for the figure.
Test 2, 4/4, 3/4 or 6/8
Section titled “Test 2, 4/4, 3/4 or 6/8”Test 2, 4/4, 3/4 or 6/8. The pile is 15 slips: five marked “4/4”, five marked “3/4” and five marked “6/8”. Before you record, set the metronome to 70, listen to eight clicks and stop it: that is the speed of every strum. An item is one slip: strum Em 24 times in downstrokes at that one speed, with no metronome, and make the loud strums fall as the slip says. Count in your head while you strum: if you said the count aloud, the recording would tell you the answer. For “4/4”: the first of every four strums. For “3/4”: the first of every two, and the first of every six the loudest of all. For “6/8”: the first of every three. Turn over the next slip as soon as the last strum has rung. Record nine items; six slips stay in the pile unseen. Your answer for each number is “4/4”, “3/4” or “6/8”. Count the strums from one loud strum to the next: four is 4/4, two is 3/4, three is 6/8. To mark, deal the key pile one slip to an item.
11. (4 minutes) Mark the recording of Test 2, 4/4, 3/4 or 6/8, that you made after Session 30: nine items of 24 strums. Check: the slips, turned over in order: the key pile, dealt one slip to an item, against the answers you wrote. Pass: 7 of 9. If not: do the drill once a day for a week, then make a new recording, under “Ear Drill: Fours, Twos and Threes” in Session 30; mark the new recording at least one day after you make it; Test 2 comes again at the end-of-course assessment: this item is reported and holds nobody back.

Test 5, rhythm recall
Section titled “Test 5, rhythm recall”Test 5, rhythm recall, two measures. The pile is 60 cell slips: the 38 of Session 9 and 22 more: 6 marked “quarter”, 6 marked “two eighths”, 4 marked “four sixteenths” and 6 marked “rest”. An item is eight slips in a row from left to right: the eight beats of two measures. Record with the metronome sounding at 50 BPM, one cell to a click. For each item say “1, 2, 3, 4” with four clicks, then clap the row twice through without a break. Count in your head while you clap: if you said the count aloud, the recording would tell you the answer. Record six items. On each click the claps name the cell: none is “rest”, one is “quarter”, two are “two eighths”, four are “four sixteenths”. To answer, listen to an item, stop the recording, clap the rhythm back once, and write the cells you clapped, in order. Write each cell as the number of claps on its click: 0, 1, 2 or 4. To mark, deal the key pile eight slips to an item. A rhythm is right only if every cell matched.
12*. (8 minutes) Mark the recording of Test 5, rhythm recall, that you made after Session 30: six rhythms of two measures, clapped back and written down. Check: the slips, turned over in order: the key pile, dealt eight slips to an item, against the cells you wrote. Pass: 4 of 6, a rhythm counting only if every cell matched. If not: do the drill once a day for the one more week that “Overall Phase Assessment” gives, then make a new recording, under “Ear Drill: Clap the Cells” in Session 30; mark the new recording at least one day after you make it; Test 5 comes again at the end-of-course assessment.

Overall Phase Assessment
Section titled “Overall Phase Assessment”Must-pass items passed: _____ of 4. Still open, by number: ______________________________
Reported items: item 1 __________, item 3 __________, item 4 __________, item 9 __________, item 10 __________, item 11 __________
Four marks must pass. Three are items of their own: items 2 and 8 must pass because their exit criteria (E6 and E26) are in the Grade 2 set, which Course Overview lists under “Exit Criteria”: D D U U D U at 95 BPM and the programme; and item 12 must pass as the one ear item of that set that this checkpoint holds (E23). The fourth is a group, counted once: of the three reading items, 5, 6 and 7 (E16, E18 and E17), one must pass.
Items 1, 3, 4, 9, 10 and 11 are reported and never have to pass: items 1 (E4), 4 (E9) and 11 (E24) are a start on Grade 3 skills; item 3, the pushed pattern, is reported by the words of exit criterion E7 itself; and the criteria of items 9 and 10 (E20 and E21) are the course’s own. On the second line of the result, write a Yes on one of them as “started” and a Not yet as “not yet”.
If every must-pass item passes, go on to the next phase. If one does not, spend one more week on the practice plan of the showcase week, with the failed items in its “Checkpoint items” row, and take those items again. After that week, go on to the next phase whatever the result: the checkpoint’s result names each item that is still open, and it comes again at the next checkpoint that holds it or at the end-of-course assessment. Nobody is held at a checkpoint for more than one week.
An item that is only reported holds nobody back: if it is not passed, go on to the next phase all the same, do what its If not line says, and meet it again where that line says.
Here the next phase begins with Session 31, and the showcase week is Week 30, the week of Session 30. An unseen item is taken again on its second passage, under “Passages for a Second Try”, and never on the first one. Write down each item that is still open after the one more week, on the line below.
Still open after the one more week, each with where it comes again: ______________________________
Every item of this checkpoint comes again in the end-of-course assessment, after Session 35: there is no later checkpoint.
The result is a count of what you can do today against this course’s own marks: it is no exam result and promises none.
Passages for a Second Try
Section titled “Passages for a Second Try”The three passages in this section are for a second try only: do not open them unless none of items 5, 6 and 7 was passed and you take those items again after the one more week that “Overall Phase Assessment” gives.
This section is for a second try only. Each passage in it is in a closed block: open a block only when you take its item again, at step (2) of the routine.
For item 5: the second TAB passage
Take it exactly as item 5 says: by the unseen TAB routine printed with item 5, with 30 seconds of study, at 60 BPM, followed on the page from the recording, and with the same pass mark: no stop and at most 1 wrong note.
